Winnetka Real Estate

The Village of Winnetka is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Chicago. An easy train ride, of approximately 35-45 minutes, Winnetka is located just north of Kenilworth.  Winnetka, Native American for "the beautiful land", was named in 1854 and is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan.  Winnetka has the feel of a modern "Mayberry" with it's tree-lined streets, vintage houses, and sense of community.  The population of Winnetka is 12,419 and is 3.8 square miles in area.  Winnetka's proximity to Chicago, Lake Michigan, and the excellent school system are three factors that drive real estate prices in the area.

Winnetka Public Schools

Schools

The Winnetka Public Schools (District 36) has a reputation and tradition of excellence. District 36, known as "a community of learners," places a premium on academic excellence.  Based on a developmental approach to education, the system fosters each student's strengths and tries to encompass the entire student. There are three local grade schools that serve Winnetka: Greeley, Crow Island, and Hubbard Woods.  All three schools serve grades K-4.  The benefit of these neighborhood schools is that children really get to know each other in their neighborhood.  At the fifth grade level, all students in District 36, merge together for middle school at Skokie School for grades 5-6.  Washburne School is the Junior High and serves grades 7-8.

The unincorporated section of Winnetka attends Avoca (District 37) , which is divided into two schools, Avoca for grades K-5 and Marie Murphy for Grades 6-8.

New Trier High School, Winnetka, Illinois

For high school, all students in New Trier Township are able to attend New Trier High School (District 203) .  New Trier is divided into two campuses.  The West Campus, located in Northfield, is home to all freshman students.  This is a wonderful arrangement, as it is the first time students from all six junior high schools come together.  The freshman campus provides a great opportunity for a large class of 1000 students to get to know each other without the influence of the older grades.  The East Campus is the original campus, established in 1901.  The East Campus, located in Winnetka, accommodates sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  New Trier is known for its academic excellence in addition to its award winning fine arts program and excellent athletic programs.

Parks and Recreation

The Winnetka Park District boasts 26 parks including 5 lakefront parks.  Tower Road Beach is the primary swimming beach with beach house, restrooms, showers, and concessions.  Centennial Park is also known as the dog park and beach.  The Village Green is where the village of Winnetka's Memorial Day Service and 4th of July Celebrations take place.  It is also home to the Winnetka Children's fair on the day school gets out in summer.  The Village Green is a frequent meeting spot and is in the heart of East Winnetka. Throughout the village, there are many athletic fields for soccer, lacrosse, t-ball, baseball, and more.  The Winnetka Park District also maintains a golf course, which is used year round - either for golf or in winter for cross-country skiing.  The village has an indoor ice rink with a wide variety of hockey and figure skating programs.  A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center, adjacent to the Winnetka Ice Arena, has indoor and outdoor courts, as well as paddle tennis courts.

The Skokie Lagoons are also a nice asset for Winnetka and the surrounding area.  They provide a buffer from the expressway and more importantly provide recreational opportunities for canoeing, sailing, fishing, and more. Skokie is a native American term for "trembling marsh." The Skokie Lagoons were created in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) as an effort to drain the Skokie Marsh. The Skokie Marsh was converted to the Skokie Lagoons to minimize flooding in the western part of town.

Village Life
The Winnetka Public Library is located in the heart of town on the corner of Oak and Linden.  It offers many programs for children and adults and has access to other libraries in the system.

The Winnetka Community House is an invaluable resource.  It is home to many classes and activities for young and old alike.  There are a large variety of classes available for young children, art classes for all ages, exercise classes, puppy kindergarten, and much more.  There are rooms available for birthday parties, scouting, and many other similar activities.  The Winnetka Community House also is home to the Winnetka Fitness Centre.  The Community House also hosts the Winnetka Antiques Show each spring, which brings antique dealers from across the country.

There are three Metra Train stops in Winnetka, the southernmost being the Indian Hill Station which is at Green Bay Road at Winnetka Avenue just blocks from New Trier High School.  Some students take the train to school from Glencoe and Wilmette.  The main Winnetka stop is between Oak and Elm Streets in the heart of downtown Winnetka.  The third, and northernmost stop, is in Hubbard Woods.  The Hubbard Woods stop is in the heart of the Hubbard Woods business district.  Commuting time averages about 35-45 minutes from Winnetka to Downtown Chicago.  Luckily, Winnetka's forefathers had the foresight to bury the tracks in 1938.  As a result, it is the only suburb along the North Shore that does not have to deal with the inconvenience and/or the safety issue of crossing the tracks.  The bridges across town make travel in Winnetka easy, safe, and convenient.

There are three business districts in Winnetka: East Elm Street, West Elm Street, and Hubbard Woods.  The two Elm Street districts are located on either side of the Elm Street Metra Train Station.  All three areas have shops to interest just about everyone.  There are many local independent merchants who live here in the village of Winnetka and thus take pride in the quality of service and merchandise provided.

Winnetka recently completed a new Public Safety building that houses both the police and fire departments.
